Detection of Antigen of RSV and Clinical Considerations on Respiratory Illness in Infancy

Abstract
A Clinical study was made on 152 cases with respiratory illness less than 2 years of age, were admitted to Dong Sang Sacred Heart Hospital from December 1990 to June 1991.
The nasopharyngeal discharge of patients were examined for detection of antigen of RSV by ELISA method.
We evaluated the RSV positivity in the respiratory illness and relationship between RSV infection and atopic characteristics.
@ES The results as follows:
@EN 1) The antigen of RSV was detected in 24 cases(22.4%).
2) The sex incidence of the repiratory illness infant was higher in male. The male to female ratio was 2.5: 1. In RSV positive group, the male to female ratio was 1.8:1.
3) The age distribution of the respiratory illness infant was higher in 3-5months of age.
4) The RSV positivity was 27.7% in the asthmatic bronchitis, 23.0% in the acute bronchiolitis, 22.7% in the acute bronchitis, 12.5% in the croup, 7.1% in the pneumonia.
5) Statistical significancy was not found between RSV infection and feeding method.
6) There was no significant difference in past history of infactile eczema, family history of atopy, level of total serum IgE, eosinophil count of peripheral blood between RSV positive group and negative group.
